Social activist artist, civil rights, the Civil War, Gettysburg, mass incarceration, justice, equality

Cynthia Groya

New York, NY and Princeton, NJ

The duality of diversity and inequality in our culture have influenced my art and teaching for decades, but when my own son was the age of young unarmed Black men repeatedly gunned down in our streets, I experienced a sense of urgency. I know if not for the color of his skin, my son would quite possibly be one of those targeted young men. Formal and self- education about things I never learned in school, inform my art practice as I work to unconceal our country’s history of injustice and inequality.

My work reflects my objective. Layers that include mirrors and light and historical documents and barbed wire and transparent surfaces and bullet holes and broken glass, reflect our history. My videos demonstrate the injustice of mass incarceration and historic racial inequality. In my mixed media work, synthetic polymers and mediums and acrylic skins are imbedded with dust and ash and broken promises onto wood and steel, under surfaces of painted plexiglass.

Though these landscapes are sometimes dark and disconcerting, there is always the presence of light, a spark of possibility, of hope. Looking in and seeing him/herself, the viewer might be intrigued to peer deeper, possibly at how these images not only reference the past but inform our present. My hope is that by un-concealing the past, we will recognize the strength in tending our collective roots instead of destroying them.

I have participated in over 50 group/juried exhibitions and 5 solo exhibitions,

and maintain studios in New York, NY, and Princeton, NJ.
